Important Considerations for Living off the Ocean during Your Sailing and Cruising

New York (USA), September 02, 2017

Cruising offers excellent opportunity to explore and look across the sea. The yacht is your home for the length of your voyage. Hence, you should take proper care on board whether traveling alone or on a chartered yacht. If cruising with family and friends, delegate and share all chores so that everybody remains occupied and gets leisure time as well.

Important Considerations during Sailing and Cruising

Power

Restrict power consumption and switch on only essential lights. Do not open refrigerator often. Instead, use cooler for beverages.

Water

Water usage and management should be properly monitored. Water tanks take a long time for refueling and hence water usage should be sparse. Sometimes you have to take a detour just for refilling your water tanks. Plan your route to include water-refilling ports. Simple facts can control water consumption. Do not run water tap while brushing or rinsing dishes. Open and close briefly to control water consumption. Rinse dishes in a bucket to save water. While showering, wet with little water, and thereafter run shower only after shampooing.

Anchoring

Anchor at a safe place with other boats. After anchoring, slack mainsheet with proper lines to keep it secure and out of way of other yachts.

Garbage

Do not throw garbage overboard. Carry sufficient garbage bags and close mouth tightly after they are full to avoid stench. Empty garbage bags at ports at proper garbage dumping places.

Managing Children

If sailing with your family, involve your children in all chores. Teach them basic sailing tips and always keep an eye on their activities. Show and explain all-important parts of the yacht. Eight to ten-year-old children can be entrusted with small tasks on the yacht like helping with uncomplicated knots, sailing techniques, taking care of younger children, and other simple jobs. Teach children to keep rooms tidy and arrange all their things tidily. Do not allow any child to walk on deck without a properly fitting and correct size life jacket. Stock healthy snacks and sufficient water to keep them happy and well fed.

Travel Light

While packing for your cruise, restrict unnecessary clothing, make-up kits, and other accessories like jewels. Instead, pack in essentials like comfortable clothing, beachwear, shorts, t-shirts, binoculars, two-way radio, cell phone, handheld GPS, flashlights, small AC/DC inverter for charging radios and cell phones, and similar others. Pack everything in soft duffel bag and do not carry huge suitcases, as they cannot be accommodated on a yacht. You should carry essential medicines, prescription drugs, and toiletries like soap, toothpaste, sun lotions, sunburn medications, and similar others.

Enjoy your time on your cruise by reading, relaxing, spending leisure time with family and friends, and visiting local places on the route.
