Prevention of 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome
22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome can be detected before birth. Conotruncal heart defects are visible on ultrasound examination. If there is a family history of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, it is a case of inheritance. Cleft palate is seen on ultrasound only at times, however, it is more prominent only after birth. Genetic counseling is essential in these cases. Consult genetic counselor or genetic disorder specialist to plan future pregnancies. Even if deletion syndrome is not inherited, it can be passed on to the next generation.
Coping with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome
Managing a child with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome is extremely challenging. Take help of support groups, coordinate with parents having similar children, and assess educational materials not only to overcome the challenges but also to guide you to bring up your child in a better way.
Children with immune system problems and severe heart defects due to 22q11.2 deletion syndrome rarely survive the first year. Those with less intense defects grow into adults. However, they not only require life-long care for basic needs but also require extensive support for schooling.
Behavioral disorders escalate as they grow and often translate into serious psychiatric disorders in adults. Adopt individualized education programs or IEP to school your child. These programs are based on individual child’s abilities. Teenagers with less intellectual disability can opt for vocational training programs.
Life expectancy is normal if heart defects are attended to immediately.
