Diagnostic Tests and Procedures
Normally, abdominal aortic aneurysm is detected when undergoing medical examination for any other condition. A pulsating abdominal bulge is the most common indicator. Your doctor then suggests various tests.
Tests and Diagnosis for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Abdominal Ultrasound
This is a painless test. You lie on your back and a gel is applied across your abdomen. Doctor presses transducer across entire abdominal region. Transducer is a medical instrument that captures internal images. Transducer sends images to an attached computer screen. Doctor detects presence of AAA through these images that can show calcium deposits in the aneurysm wall. Gel clears away any air pockets that could restrict functioning of transducer. This is a very safe and non-invasive diagnostic procedure. It gives a clear picture of size and extent of abdominal aortic aneurysm with immaculate accuracy.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
This machine uses magnetic fields to create images of aorta. You lie on a movable table that slides within MRI machine. Magnetic field aligns atomic particles in specific cells of your body. Radio waves passed through these aligned particles produce signals according to body tissue type. Doctor analyzes these signals and images to detect presence of abdominal aortic aneurysm.
Computerized Tomography (CT) Scan
This test is done within a doughnut-shaped machine called gantry. This machine has detectors that record radiation passed through your body and converts them into electrical signals. Dye is injected to detect presence of abdominal aortic aneurysm. Signals collected on a computer are assigned colors according to their intensity. Images are formed and displayed on the screen. Doctors assess health of aorta according to these images. This test is very accurate in determining presence, location, and size of abdominal aortic aneurysm. If you are allergic to dye or have any kidney ailments, avoid CT scan.
Chest X-Ray
X-ray of your chest displays any problem areas in aorta.
Angiogram
This reflects your heart and arteries like aorta in a very detailed manner. Any swelling or abrasions are clearly visible. You can locate blood clots, thinning of arteries, and any other problems with your heart and arteries.
