Causes and Evaluation of Absence Seizure

Causes of Absence Seizure

There is no specific or defined cause for absence seizures. In some cases, it is inherited.

There are numerous nerve cells in your brain. These are neurons. They communicate with each other through chemical and electrical signals. These signals process body functions within your brain and transmit to other body parts for coordinated movements. Signals pass through synapses. During seizures, electrical activity and neurotransmitter levels are altered. These electrical signals then repeat themselves in a three-second pattern. Body impulses get confused and halt abruptly. This is absence seizure.

Evaluation of Absence Seizure

Epileptic children often reflect most symptoms of absence seizures. Rather, they keep staring into space frequently. Behavioral problems could be an indicator of absence seizure in your child. Nonetheless, there is no clear-cut explanation for abrupt seizures. It could be due to absence seizure alone or may occur in concurrence with other medical disorders.

Normally teachers at school detect concentration lapses in children. Although they may attribute it to daydreaming or other distractions, if you receive frequent complaints from your child’s school, it is best to go for a thorough medical examination.

Absence seizure can occur anytime and at any age, although it is most common in children and the elderly. Seizure does not necessarily mean you have a neurological problem. It can occur due to some temporary illness like low blood pressure, injury, fever, and similar others.
