Absence Seizure: Signs and Symptoms

Signs and symptoms include:

Staring Blankly
This is the most common symptom. Children or adults with absence seizure go completely blank for few seconds. It seems as if you are staring into vacant space. When it occurs, you do not listen, speak, or understand anything. It may not cause a fall; you just freeze for few seconds.

Fluttering of Eyelids
During a seizure, child could flutter or blink eyelids very quickly. Sometimes it could be sudden jerking or twitching of leg or arm without any reason.

Memory Absence
Your child goes blank for few seconds and stops abruptly in the midst of whatever the child was doing. Further, this episode of going blank is not recorded in the brain and child instantaneously resumes activity as if nothing has happened. There is no sense of any confusion. Schoolchildren experiencing absence seizures are often blamed for frequent daydreaming by their teachers as this symptom causes them to go blank. Seizures often interrupt conversations with family or friends.

Uncharacteristic Symptoms
Few uncharacteristic symptoms include sudden and unusual movements like chewing motions, lip smacking, absence of motion without falling, and small hand or arm movements. Symptom starts and ends without any indication and is so brief that it is hardly noticeable. Everything happens within a split second. Symptoms may occur only occasionally or sometimes for more than a hundred times in a day.
