Acanthosis Nigricans: Signs and Symptoms

The most characteristic sign of acanthosis nigricans is skin change in color and texture. Rather, it is the only sign of acanthosis nigricans. There are hardly any symptoms or signs of acanthosis nigricans other than those associated with skin. Skin darkens in patches and becomes thicker and velvety to touch. Skin changes do not occur fast but spread over many months and years. Eventually, dark velvety patches appear very prominently specifically in areas where skin folds are thick. Malignant acanthosis nigricans appear suddenly and develop extremely fast.

Skin sometimes starts smelling foul. Itching sensation sets in. Lesions begin in patches and develop slowly. Skin turns darker and thicker. Lesions look dirty and un-kept due to their rough texture. Skin develops plaques and hence is rough to touch. Medications and supplements accelerate occurrence of acanthosis nigricans symptoms.

Skin lesions are symmetrical and hyper-pigmented. Commonly affected areas include neck, groin, and armpits. Occasionally, skin lesions are visible on elbows, face, knees, inner thighs, and navel or belly button. In rare cases, acanthosis nigricans may occur inside mouth, on eyelids, and in anus. Normally only outer skin is affected. However, if you suffer from cancer, skin lesions of acanthosis nigricans appear on palms, lips, feet soles and over joints of fingers and toes. Acanthosis nigricans on eyelids cause problems in normal eye movements. Sometimes nail changes like hyperkeratosis and leukonychia occur.
