What is Achilles Tendinitis?
Definition of Achilles Tendinitis
Achilles tendinitis is swelling and pain of Achilles tendon. This tendon or tissue band connects back of your lower leg or calf muscles to your heel. This tendon is used for running, walking, and jumping. Achilles tendinitis commonly occurs in persons who play occasionally or runners who increase duration or intensity of their runs suddenly.
Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the human body and can sustain immense pressure and exertion. Yet, it is susceptible to injury if put under excessive strain. Rest and change in exercise pattern brings relief. If Achilles tendinitis is ignored, it could lead to rupturing or tearing of the tendon. This requires surgery.
Diagnosis of Achilles Tendinitis
Doctor normally asks simple questions to analyze symptoms. If you develop Achilles tendinitis, area around the tendon becomes warm and swells. When tendon is squeezed gently during ankle motion, you feel pain and an itchy sensation. You feel weak while walking; rather find it difficult to push your feet forward.
Doctor gently touches tendon region and back of ankle to locate source of inflammation or pain and to check if there is any impairment in flexibility or range of motion of foot and ankle. In certain cases, imaging tests like X-ray, MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging), or ultrasound becomes essential. This helps in a clearer diagnosis by eliminating other possible causes of swelling or pain.
