Causes of Achilles Tendinitis
Causes of Achilles tendinitis include:
– Sudden increase in intensity of exercise
– Running on uneven or hard ground or concrete
– Not doing any warm-up exercises before starting with your exercise routine
– Using improper footwear like worn-out shoes, incorrect size of shoes, shoes with improper support while exercising or running
– Including stair climbing or hill running to exercise routine without prior practice
– Sudden physical activity like sprinting to the finish line
– Injury to calf muscle leading to impaired flexibility of the region
– Increasing age leading to depletion of tendon and thereby straining entire area
– Differential tendon anatomy like flat foot in place of an arch exerts pressure on tendon
– Starting a strenuous exercise program when calf muscles are very tight
– Jumping excessively as while playing basketball
– Sudden changes like turning in or out of foot
– Extra bone growth where Achilles tendon attaches to heel bone rubs against tendon and causes pain
Evaluation of Achilles Tendinitis
Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body. Upper calf muscles merge and insert into back of heel bone to form this tendon. Blood supply is limited to approximately one to four above this insertion into heel bone. Achilles tendinitis is not due to any specific injury. Achilles tendinitis is mainly due to excessive and repetitive stress to tendon.
