Treatments Options for Achilles Tendinitis

Simple self-care treatment options provide good relief from Achilles tendinitis. However, if symptoms are persistent and severe, treatment and medications differ.

Nonsurgical Treatments

Nonsurgical treatments do not deliver instant relief. It could take three to six months for Achilles tendinitis symptoms to subside completely. Nonsurgical treatments include:

Ice Packs: Place an ice pack on Achilles tendon area for around twenty minutes at a stretch. Stop earlier if skin becomes numb. You can use it after exercising or when pain is severe. You may use it as many times as required in a day. Fill a foam cup with water and freeze it. Use it as an ice pack after tearing off the rim. Rub it across your paining tendon. You can reuse this ice pack as and when needed.

Rest: The foremost step to alleviate pain in tendon region is to stop doing exercises or activities that cause or escalate pain. Rest allows time for tissue to heal and rejuvenate. Type of rest depends on severity of pain. If pain is mild, reducing workout intensity can provide relief. If pain is severe, you need complete rest for few days or weeks. If you are accustomed to high-impact exercises like running or jogging, shift to low-impact exercises like swimming or biking to stay active and yet not exert pressure on your ailing tendon.

Physical Therapy: This is extremely beneficial and effective in treating Achilles tendinitis. Therapists guide you through specific strengthening and stretching exercises to heal and strengthen Achilles tendon and supporting structures. Therapists also suggest shoe insert or wedge to slightly elevate heel. This provides a comfortable cushion for tendon and alleviates pain or pressure. Compression bandages and ankle supports also provide relief from pain. Keeping foot elevated almost above your heart can lessen pain.

Surgery

Surgery is done in cases of tendon tear or rupture. If Achilles tendinitis is recurring with increased inflammation, surgery provides necessary relief.

Medications for Achilles Tendinitis

Common medications for Achilles tendinitis include naproxen (Aleve) and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB) for relief from pain and swelling. If these do not provide any relief within a month of use, follow doctor’s instructions and prescriptions for stronger medications.
