Causes of Achilles Tendinopathy
Repetitive injuries, albeit small, to Achilles tendon may cause Achilles tendinopathy. These tiny injuries known as microtrauma do not allow tendon to heal completely. Hence, recurring injuries over time damage tendon leading to Achilles tendinopathy.
Factors that injure Achilles tendon include:
– Exercising on hard or sloped surfaces
– Excessive use of Achilles tendon as is common in runners, dancers, and in other sports that involve lot of jumping
– Improper exercising or running technique
– Inappropriate footwear used while training or exercising
– Having a high-arched foot
– Increasing training or workout intensity suddenly
– Genetic factors that impede tendon healing after injury
– Tight or underdeveloped hamstring muscles hampering flexibility of motion
– Specific type of arthritis like psoriatic arthritis
– Excessive and prolonged use of harmful drugs like fluoroquinolones
– Constantly wearing high-heeled footwear shortens tendons and calf muscles. This affects tendon movement while exercising in flat footwear as tendon stretches beyond its normal range.
Evaluation of Achilles Tendinopathy
Achilles tendinopathy does not set in suddenly and develops as a gradual pain. Normally you feel pain either as soon as you start your workout or at the end. It starts around two to six centimeters above heel insertion region. When you are exercising, you do not feel the pain. Over time and continued use of tendon, pain progresses and is present all through your workout or even while just walking.
