What is Achilles Tendinosis?

Definition of Achilles Tendinosis

Achilles tendinosis is a chronic ailment characterized by microscopic tears of Achilles tendon causing thickening of tendon. It causes pain although there is no inflammation, warmth, or redness of surrounding tissue. It develops gradually and stays for long time often degenerating Achilles tendon. Hence, Achilles tendinosis is referred to as degenerative tendinopathy.

Normal blood circulation in tendon region is small but sufficient to keep tendon healthy and active. Numerous minor tears in Achilles tendon restrict its ability to heal. Poor blood circulation further limits tendon from repairing torn tissues. As a result, Achilles tendon continues to tear. Slowly it thickens and weakens causing immense pain.

Diagnosis of Achilles Tendinosis

Achilles tendinosis normally occurs in people who are between thirty-five and forty-five years. Tendon is thick and painful. Thickened elongation of tendon can be felt by touching with finger. Leg becomes weak and difficult to push. The condition is not restricted to athletes alone and is common even in people who do not partake in any strenuous physical exercises. There are no inflammatory cells when seen under a microscope. However, microscopic tears and chronic damage of tendon is clearly visible.

Achilles tendinosis is often misdiagnosed as Achilles tendinitis as symptoms are almost similar. Tendinosis refers to chronic degeneration without inflammation. Microscopic tears cause cellular damage to tendon. This reduces tensile strength often leading to rupture of tendon.
