Achilles Tendinosis: Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms of Achilles tendinosis appear gradually. Often, they are present long before you actually feel pain or stiffness in tendon. Collagen degeneration of tendinosis exists for some time with no symptoms. Only later symptom starts as a slight pain in and around tendon area soon after physical activity involving excessive leg movements. Pain normally remains concentrated a few centimeters above the heel. It normally starts as soon as you get out of bed in the morning.
Soon pain escalates and worsens during and after physical activity. Sometimes pain disappears during physical training but reappears soon after stopping training. Tendon joint area stiffens and swelling restricts easy movement. Leg movement is difficult and you experience discomfort all throughout the day.
If you ignore pain for prolonged periods, it could eventually lead to tendon rupture. A sharp pain characterizes this. Walking is almost impossible.
Affected tendon is visibly enlarged when compared to unaffected tendon. This enlargement is primarily due to fibrous build-up within tendon or between tendon and its paratendon. Nodules are clearly visible across length of tendon. Sometimes tendon movement causes grinding sensation accompanied with creaking noises.
Pain location and extent depends on severity of Achilles tendinosis. Pain could occur when tendon is stretched or when you stand on your toes. Pain is due to muscle contraction and the pull on damaged tendon.
