What is Achilles Tendonitis?

Definition of Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles tendon swells due to overuse of the tendon leading to Achilles tendonitis. Although this commonly occurs in sportspersons, Achilles tendonitis also affects many others like dancers and athletes. Repetitive stress on feet causes pain and injures Achilles tendon, the largest tendon in the body.

Tendon is a band of connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone. Achilles tendon is an important tendon of your body as it connects calf muscles to heel bone. This helps you lift your heel when you walk, stand on tiptoe, or run. When you jump or stamp a lot with your feet as is common with basketball players and dancers, this tendon bears the brunt. Overuse injures Achilles tendon leading to the painful condition of Achilles tendonitis.

Diagnosis of Achilles Tendonitis

Doctor examines foot, leg, ankle, knee, and checks range of motion of your foot. Inflammation of Achilles tendon restricts easy movement and causes pain. If pain is severe, doctor could suspect rupture of Achilles tendon. To check this condition, doctor instructs you to lie face down. Doctor presses your calf muscles while you bend your knee. If you are able to flex your foot, tendon has not ruptured.

Nonetheless, doctor advises X-ray or MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan of your leg and foot. This reveals any partial tears of tendon, fractures, or anything else that could worsen your condition further.
