Causes and Evaluation of Achilles Tendonitis

New York (USA), June 17, 2013

Causes of Achilles Tendonitis

Causes for development of Achilles tendonitis include:

– Sudden sharp movements of feet and leg contract calf muscles and stress passes on to Achilles tendon. This often tears tendon fibers.
– Increasing intensity and duration of exercises swiftly
– Starting training program after a long period of inactivity
– Climbing hills or doing stair climbing exercises
– Weak or stiff calf muscles
– Traumatic injury to the Achilles tendon
– Exercising without doing sufficient warming or stretching exercises
– Exercising or walking in inappropriate footwear like shoes without sufficient padding, worn-out shoes, or wrong-sized shoes,
– Wearing high-heeled shoes for very long periods
– Sudden changes in footwear like changing from high-heeled to flat shoes
– Playing sports or taking part in activities that require sudden stops and starts as in basketball, volleyball, tennis, and diving
– Flat feet or arched feet causes lower leg to rotate inward while running and thereby forcing Achilles tendon to stretch beyond its normal capacity
– Exercising or running on uneven surfaces
– Arthritis can cause tendonitis in both legs

Evaluation of Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles tendon consists of many tiny fibers. Overuse of tendon stresses these fibers. They sometimes tear leading to pain, irritation, and swelling. As tendon swells, it rubs against surrounding sheath. This rubbing causes irritation in sheath. As a result, sheath also becomes swollen and entire region is warm and painful.
