Complications and Risk Factors for Achilles Tendonitis

New York (USA), June 17, 2013

Achilles Tendonitis: Complications

Achilles tendonitis restricts free movement of ankle and leg. Acute cases cause rupture of tendon. Although rest provides relief, it is only an interim solution as pain erupts as soon as you start strenuous physical exercises or activities. Medical or surgical therapy is essential to control pain and further degeneration of Achilles tendon. Nonetheless, it is being strongly debated as to whether surgical or medical therapy is more appropriate for Achilles tendonitis.

Achilles Tendonitis: Risk Factors

Sportspersons: Achilles tendonitis commonly occurs in volleyball players, basketball players, jumpers, and sprinters. Sometimes it also occurs in cyclists due to low saddle weight resulting in over-flexing of ankle while pedaling.

Age: Tendonitis is common among recreational athletes in the age group of thirty to fifty years. Athletes in this age group stay active over intermittent periods. Sudden high-impact exercises and activities lead to tendonitis.

Sex: Male athletes are at a greater risk of Achilles tendonitis than female athletes are.

Heredity: Sometimes genetic factors prompt development of Achilles tendonitis.

Mortality: Achilles tendonitis does not cause death. However, restriction in movements, pain, prolonged period of recovery and uncertainty about complete recovery does make you feel gloomy and sad.

Recurrence: Achilles tendonitis can reoccur with same or increased intensity. Anti-inflammatory medications provide only temporary relief. However, orthotic therapy, serial casting, extracorporeal shock wave therapy, anti-inflammatory medications and in extreme cases surgery does deliver positive results.
