Achilles Tendon Rupture: Complications and Risk Factors

Risk factors and complications for Achilles tendon rupture include:

Sports: If you take part in recreational sports like football, jumping, running, gymnastics, tennis and basketball, tendon injuries are common and frequent as these sports involve sudden starts and stops.

Age: Tendon rupture is more common in middle age.

Sex: Males are five times more prone to develop Achilles tendon rupture than women are.

Antibiotics: If you have been on Fluoroquinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin (Cipro), glucocorticoids, or levofloxacin (Levaquin), tendon rupture chances are maximized. Quinolones are antibacterial agents that restrict functioning of DNA Gyrase, an essential enzyme in DNA replication. This antibiotic is commonly prescribed to the elderly. They thereby remain more prone to tendon rupture.

Prior Tendon Injuries: If you have suffered from tendon injuries in the past, there is every possibility of developing a rupture sooner or later. Further insufficient rehabilitation of any injury in calf, ankle, or Achilles tendon could lead to tendon rupture.

Steroid Injections: These injections are painkillers and doctors often inject steroids into ankle joints to reduce pain and inflammation. However, these injections weaken other tendons in the vicinity thereby leading to Achilles tendon rupture.

Flexibility: If your body joints are less flexible, you are at a greater risk of developing Achilles tendon rupture.

Muscular Weakness: Weak muscles and poor muscular strength weakens tendons may lead to tendon rupture.
