Preventing and Coping with Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is better taken care of through simple prevention and coping techniques than through prescribed medications and other treatment options.

Acid Reflux: Useful Prevention and Coping Techniques

1. Eat small meals as they put less pressure on stomach and thereby restrict acid formation.

2. Keep a gap of two to three hours between meals and bedtime.

3. Avoid eating acidic foods like peppermint, coffee, fatty foods, acidic fruit juices, onions, tea, and chocolate. Avoid these specifically before bedtime.

4. Lift head of your bed to a further thirty degrees either with extra pillows or an elevated bed. Upper part of your body should be at an elevated level and not only the head part. This restricts acid flow into esophagus thereby providing essential relief from acid reflux.

5. Avoid wearing tight-fitting garments as these restrict free movements of food through esophagus and into stomach. These cause highly acidic contents of stomach to travel upwards through esophagus.

6. Lose weight if you are overweight. If you have correct body weight, work towards maintaining it at the same level. Higher body weight exerts more pressure on stomach thereby leading to acid reflux.

Although preventive measures help you cope with acid reflux symptoms, do not stop prescribed medications without appropriate medical advice. Seek immediate medical advice if there is any exaggeration of symptoms or if you feel extremely uncomfortable.
