ACL Injury: Diagnostic Tests and Procedures
Doctor asks for symptoms and details of your medical history. Doctor examines injured knee intricately to check for swelling, tenderness, and to locate ligament tear. A thorough physical examination of knee diagnoses ACL injury clearly.
To further confirm and analyze extent of injury, doctor advises different tests:
X-Ray: X-ray only confirms if there is any injury or fracture to bone, as it cannot visualize soft tissues like tendons and ligaments.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): This test shows extent of ACL injury and details if joint cartilage or other knee ligaments are also injured. MRI creates images of hard and soft tissues with the help of a strong magnetic field and radio waves.
Ultrasound: This test uses sound waves to detect injuries in knee muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
Arthroscopy: Doctor makes small incisions in knee to insert a thin fiber-optic viewing scope. Doctor is then able to view injuries to knee and in some cases repairs them similarly.
Arthrocentesis: If knee is very hot, swollen, and reddish, this test is done to remove fluid from knee and provide relief from pain. Fluid is examined for any infection. Traces of blood indicate a tear while fat drops indicate a broken bone.
Other tests like Lachman test, anterior drawer test, and Pivot shift test diagnose tears and sprains and detect extent of laxity in your knees.
