What is Acne?

Definition of Acne

Acne is a skin disease occurring due to blocking of hair follicles with dead skin cells and oily fluid produced by oil glands present under your skin. Acne is derived from Greek word ‘acme’ meaning ‘spot’ or ‘point’. Acne is mostly seen on face, chest, neck, back, and shoulders. Acne heals very slowly. New ones appear when old ones seem to dry off. Although acne is not fatal, it does leave scars on skin.

Acne normally occurs during adolescence. High levels of testosterone during puberty prompt acne development. Acne affects boys and girls alike although it prolongs in younger men longer due to higher testosterone levels. In most cases, acne vanishes by the time you are twenty-five or more. In few cases, it extends well into later years.

Diagnosis of Acne

There are numerous pores on your skin. These connect to oil glands located underneath skin through small canals called follicles. A small hair grows out of your skin through follicle. Oil glands secrete sebum, an oily fluid. Sebum transports dead skin cells to skin surface through follicles. Acne occurs when follicles get blocked.

Acne if severe is inflammatory. Such acne is sometimes referred to as cyst. Cystic acne affects skin tissue much deeper than normal acne. Cystic acne if left untreated leads to severe scarring of skin. This is a difficult condition to treat and cure.
