Acne: Diagnostic Tests and Procedures

Acne is prominently seen on your skin. Doctor can diagnose acne by just a visual examination of your skin. Doctor thereafter conducts a physical examination of acne on different body parts. Doctor also asks about your medical history. Women are asked about menstrual cycles and their regularity as acne often flares during menstrual periods and occurs because of irregular periods.

Doctor may advise blood test and check hormone levels before starting with medications. Acne occurs due to high testosterone levels. If acne is very severe or inflammatory, doctor refers you to a dermatologist.

Before visiting your doctor for acne, gather and keep ready information such as any prescription medications, supplements or vitamins you are currently taking for any other ailment, any sudden changes in your life, major stresses, your dietary specifications, and the like.

Doctor may ask you questions about any family history of acne, any change in cosmetics, lotions, hair products, or soaps, any itching sensations, or any other discomfort occurring due to acne flare-ups. A doctor will grade acne according to inflammation, types of comedones, severity of occurrence, and about how widespread it is. Accordingly, acne is classified as Grade I, II, III, and IV. Grade I is the mildest while Grade IV is the most severe. There are various acne grading-techniques like Cook’s grading, Leeds grading, and Pillsbury grading scales.
