Causes of Acoustic Neuroma
The main cause for acoustic neuroma is a malfunctioning gene on chromosome 22. The gene produces a protein that controls growth of Schwann cells. These cells cover the nerves. However, there is no clear cause for malfunctioning of the gene. Research indicates that in most cases such a malfunctioning gene is inherited. Hence, acoustic neuroma is linked to the genetic disorder neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2).
Evaluation of Acoustic Neuroma
Acoustic neuromas are normally uncommon and sporadic in nature. They often occur in both ears. Some scientists are of the view that high doses of radiation lead to acoustic neuroma. This rare disorder is however occurring with increasing incidence. Nonetheless, they do not display any defined growth pattern.
