Acromegaly: Complications

Acromegaly occurs due to abnormal production of growth hormone after your skeleton and other body organs have completed their growth cycle. Acromegaly can lead to various medical complications and serious health conditions. These include:

– Enlargement of heart muscles leading to heart ailments like cardiomyopathy and heart failure
– Arthritis
– High blood pressure leading to hypertension
– Sleep apnea or restrictive sleep due to breathlessness while sleeping
– Diabetes
– Precancerous growths or polyps in colon
– Excess wrist tissue presses on nerves causing pain and tingling in fingers and hands leading to carpal tunnel syndrome
– Uterine fibroids or small tumors in uterus
– Spinal cord compression
– Loss of vision
– Reduced production of other pituitary hormones
– Kidney failure
– Excessive sweating on face and hands leading to seborrhea

Acromegaly: Risk Factors

There are no known risk factors for acromegaly other than hereditary traits and pituitary tumor. Normally acromegaly is predominant in people in the age group of forty to forty-five years. If any family member has pituitary tumor or has had it in the past, you could develop acromegaly.

It is important to seek medical treatment to avoid complications from developing into fatal conditions. Early treatment can restrict complications from turning worse. If you are at a risk of acromegaly, seek medical advice as soon as you develop even a small symptom.
