Causes of Actinic Keratosis
The predominant cause for actinic keratosis is excessive or frequent exposure to ultra-violet rays of sun. Actinic keratosis starts in the epidermis. Normally, epidermal layer of skin is continually shed as old skin cells give way to new and healthy skin cells. However, UV rays change color and composition of your skin. This causes lesions and blotches on skin surface. Commercial tanning lamps and beds also cause actinic keratosis. Penetration of ultra-violet rays can take place even on cloudy days.
Evaluation of Actinic Keratosis
Actinic keratosis is most prevalent in Australia followed by the United States. It affects mainly fair-skinned blue-eyed people. It is more widespread in the elderly due to prolonged exposure to sun and increased frequency of such exposure with advancing age. Sometimes young people in the age group of twenty to thirty years are also affected by actinic keratosis.
Men are more susceptible to actinic keratosis than women due to their outdoor occupation are. The earliest lesions appear as rough spots on skin. These are felt more than seen. They seem to be like sandpaper. However, later on these lesions are clearly visible. They remain unchanged for many years and enlarge thereafter. Although actinic keratosis is considered a prelude to skin cancer, it does not always turn cancerous. Biopsy alone can confirm diagnosis. In rare cases, they grow fast and prove fatal.
