Preventing and Coping with Actinic Keratosis
It is important to prevent actinic keratosis as it could lead to skin cancer. Simple steps include:
1. Restrict exposure to sun, specifically between ten in the morning and four in the evening, as ultra-violet rays are most intense during this period. Also, intensity of sun is higher at the start of summer season.
2. Even at other times, do not remain in sunlight too long as to develop a sunburn or tan. Restrict your time at swimming pools and beaches. Sun exposure is stronger in reflective surfaces like water, snow, concrete, ice, sand, and areas painted white. Skin burns faster at higher altitudes.
3. Use sunscreen regularly. Apply twenty minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours if you are outdoors. Use sunscreen even on cloudy days and during winter. Use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with SPF of 15 or higher. If you spend long hours outdoors, use a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher.
4. Avoid tanning beds. These emit ultraviolet A (UVA) rays. Although these rays are safer than ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, they penetrate deeper and could lead to actinic keratosis.
5. Keep your arms and legs covered with full-sleeved shirts, skirts, and pants. Use a broad-brimmed hat.
6. Examine your skin from head to toe. Visit your doctor even for any small skin lesion.
