Acute Febrile Neutrophilic Dermatosis: Signs and Symptoms

Typical symptom of acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis or sweet’s syndrome is abrupt eruptions in the form of small red bumps on your neck, arms, face, and back. Sometimes they are reddish blue or purple in color. Most lesions are covered with numerous pustules. These small bumps or lesions grow big very fast and quickly progress into circular clusters spreading across an inch or more in diameter. These clusters are very painful. They occur in patterns and are predominant at back of hands and fingers. These lesions do not normally appear on your chest. These lesions subdue with treatment and normally do not leave any scars.

Another symptom of sweet’s syndrome includes pulmonary infections. Such infections surface as chronic cough, dyspnea, and pulmonary infiltrates. In severe cases, symptoms lead to pneumonia and respiratory failure.

A common symptom of acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis is eye infections in the form of conjunctivitis. Other eye infections include glaucoma, scleritis, sub-conjunctival hemorrhage, iritis, limbal nodules, uveitis, and sometimes you suffer sudden loss of vision.

Another symptom is oral lesions on tongue, lips, and inner throat. These lesions erupt as ulcers as commonly seen in patients with hematologic disorders.

Recurrent and severe headaches accompanied by seizures and intermittent bouts of unconsciousness are characteristic symptoms of acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis. These are due to disruptions in peripheral neuropathy.

If your skin lesions are of a malignant nature, extensive ulcers appear. Most ulcers are difficult to treat as they do not respond positively to medications. Sometimes these skin lesions occur due to minor traumatic incidents like bites, scratches, or sunburns.

Uncharacteristic eruptions or presentations in tympanic membrane and external auditory canal are symptoms of acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis. Sometimes rashes, scars, and papules appear on scalp.

Very rare symptoms of acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis include inflammations across joints, bone marrow, spleen, muscles, kidneys, and intestines. Such inflammations could lead to multiple organ dysfunctions. High doses of intravenous injections of methyl-prednisolone could provide relief.
