Acute Sinusitis: Clinical Trials and Research Studies
Acute sinusitis is a common condition with around 30 million cases occurring annually in the United States. On an average, children develop upper respiratory tract infections six to eight times in a year. Around 13% of such infections translate into acute bacterial sinusitis. Women encounter more episodes of acute sinusitis than men do. This is probably because women commonly take care of children and infection is easily passed on. The rate of acute sinusitis in men is 11.5%, and women, is 20.3%.
Globally, chronic sinusitis affects one in thousand people. Rhino viral infections are common in autumn and spring while corona viral infections commonly occur from December to March.
Recent theories indicate fungal infections to be the primary cause for acute sinusitis. Anti-fungal treatments are being used on a trial basis. However, there are no concrete results yet.
Normally, sinus secretions flow through ostia and drain off into nasal cavity. In healthy individuals, flow is always toward ostia. This prevents contamination of sinus. Ostium at medial wall of sinus cavity is independently positioned. When viruses, allergies, or other congestants block this opening, outflow path of sinus secretion is blocked. It then flows back due to negative pressure. This causes infection. When mucus remains within nose, it gets infected and causes sinusitis. Mucociliary processes clear nasal paths naturally. If this is altered, bacterial infections lead to acute sinusitis.
