Adenomyosis originates from endometrial tissue within uterine muscles. Any surgery involving uterus like fibroid removal could lead to adenomyosis. Irrespective of how adenomyosis occurs, circulating estrogen levels in a woman’s body decide its course.

Causes of Adenomyosis
There is no specific cause for adenomyosis. Different theories abound. These include:
Developmental Origins: Experts believe adenomyosis originates from endometrial tissue existing within uterine muscles. These probably have been present since formation of uterus in the female fetus.
Uterine Inflammation during Childbirth: Uterine lining inflammation commonly occurs during postpartum period. Some experts believe that inflammation of uterine lining during this period is responsible for breaking the existing boundary of cells lining uterus wall.
Growth of Tissue: Some experts believe that uterine incisions done during cesarean childbirth operations are responsible for development of endometrial cells in and on uterus walls. Such incisions interfere with natural functioning of muscles and hence cause adenomyosis.
Stem Cell Origins: This is a very recent theory that believes bone marrow stem cells invading uterine muscles are responsible for adenomyosis.
Surgery: Any surgery involving uterus like fibroid removal could lead to adenomyosis.
Evaluation of Adenomyosis
Irrespective of how adenomyosis occurs, circulating estrogen levels in a woman’s body decide its course of development. Normally estrogen levels are in excess in middle-aged women (35 to 50 years). Natural progesterone levels in a woman’s body ceases around the age of 35. This affects estrogen levels. At the age of fifty, estrogen levels are very low in women due to menopause. Adenomyosis ceases around this time. Some studies show that adenomyosis could lead to infertility.
