What is Adhesive Capsulitis?
Definition of Adhesive Capsulitis
Adhesive capsulitis is a medical condition of the shoulder joint. It is same as frozen shoulder. Shoulder capsule or connective tissue surrounding glenohumeral joint of shoulder stiffens and swells. This causes severe pain and restricts shoulder movement. Typical symptoms include stiffness and extensive pain in shoulder joint. Pain prolongs and continues as a dull aching sensation.
It is common to develop adhesive capsulitis if recovering from ailments or medical conditions like stroke or mastectomy. It develops slowly and stays for two to three years. Pain worsens at night and in cold weather. Shoulder pain sometimes travels to neck and back. This condition normally affects people over the age of forty.
Diagnosis of Adhesive Capsulitis
Doctor diagnoses adhesive capsulitis through a simple physical examination. If your shoulder joint is extremely stiff and movement becomes very restricted, it is adhesive capsulitis. Rather, you are unable to rotate your shoulder or raise your hand. Further, range of motion of your shoulder is almost non-existent, as it does not move even if your doctor tries to rotate it.
Adhesive capsulitis passes through three stages. In the first stage lasting for six to none months, pain settles and starts worsening. In the second stage lasting for four to nine months, stiffness remains but pain shows slight improvement. In the third stage lasting for five to twenty-six months, shoulder motion returns to normal.
