Adhesive Capsulitis: Clinical Trials and Research Studies
Adhesive capsulitis commonly occurs more in women than in men. Symptoms linger for eighteen months to around three years. Nonetheless, most people with adhesive capsulitis return to normal functioning of shoulder movement within two years even without proper treatment.
Adhesive capsulitis can affect any shoulder. However, it usually affects the non-dominant shoulder in majority of cases. It is very uncommon for frozen shoulder to have a relapse in the same shoulder. Pain starts as a slight discomfort translating into a numb and piercing pain. Stiffness sets in soon.
Adhesive capsulitis restricts any form of shoulder movement. You find it difficult or almost impossible to sleep on the affected side. Even simple activities like wearing a shirt, wearing undergarments, driving, and other daily activities are impaired.
Research indicates frozen shoulder develops without any preemptive trigger or symptom. Loss of motion, active and passive, is progressive. Intermittent use of shoulder causes inflammation. As a rule, synovial fluid lubricates gap between upper arm bone or humerus and shoulder blade socket (scapula). This eases movement of ball and socket joint of your shoulder. When shoulder capsule thickens, it tightens due to scarring of tissue within capsule. This restricts movement space for humerus leading to stiffness and pain in shoulder. The restricted space clearly indicates presence of adhesive capsulitis. In normal shoulder pain, space is not restricted.
