Age Spots – Causes and Evaluation
Causes of Age Spots
The primary cause for age spots is regular and prolonged exposure to sun’s ultra-violet rays. It also occurs through use of tanning beds or tanning lamps.
A specific school of thought believes that age spots are due to changes in body metabolism patterns, ingestion of rancid oils, poor diet, lack of exercise, and poor functioning of liver. Hence, they are also called liver spots. When body metabolism rate slows down, toxins accumulate and liver is unable to excrete these toxins. These erupt as age spots. However, these are not confirmed facts and it is clinically accepted that age spots are not connected to liver functions.
Your genetic background also plays a role in how susceptible you are to age spots.
Evaluation of Age Spots
Melanin is a pigment present in epidermis or upper layer of your skin. Melanin is responsible for your skin color. When your skin is exposed to ultra-violet rays of the sun for a prolonged period, melanin production is increased. This creates a tan to protect deeper layers of skin within.
Sometimes, melanin converges at specific places with high concentrations. Even the normal process of aging leads to an increase in melanin production. Increased production and concentration of melanin develops into age spots.
Age spots develop over many long years. Hence, it will also take a lot of time in eliminating them.
