Age Spots – Diagnostic Tests and Procedures

Tests and diagnosis of age spots include:

Visual Inspection: Your doctor visually and physically inspects your skin and detects age spots.

Skin Biopsy: If your doctor is doubtful about your age spots, you are advised skin biopsy. Doctor takes out a small sample of your skin using a local anesthetic and analyses it microscopically.

Other Conditions: If your doctor suspects that your age spots could be Seborrheic keratoses, moles, or Lentigo maligna, you undergo various tests to arrive at actual condition. Seborrheic keratoses are wart-like waxy growth on your skin. They vary in size. They could be very small or spread to be around an inch across. They have a pasted appearance. Moles are dark brown spots occurring in varying sizes and colors. They could be raised or flat. They appear almost anywhere on your body. Lentigo maligna is a type of skin cancer developing due to extensive exposure to sun. It starts as a tan and slowly develops as brown or black lesions with irregular border and uneven coloring. They grow lager in size and appear slightly raised.

Your dermatologist would ask you many questions as to when did age spots appear, whether they itch or bother in any other manner, whether they appeared gradually, whether you are exposed to sun for long periods, whether you use any skin protection cream, and similar more.
