Age-Related Hearing Loss – Clinical Trials and Research Studies

Age–related hearing loss affects men more than women. Loss in hearing abilities could begin as early as the age of eighteen. Young adults often lose the ability to hear above 15 or 16 kHz. However, hearing loss is not detected then. Hearing disability comes to the fore much later in life. The condition worsens if also exposed to loud music and sounds of shooting.

Presbycusis or age-related hearing loss is more prominent for high-pitched sounds. It also affects speech perceptions. Normally such hearing loss remains affected across both ears. Microscopic changes occurring during age-related hearing loss include giant stereociliary degeneration and hair cell degeneration of the cochlea.
