Agnogenic Myeloid Metaplasia – Treatments and Medications
Agnogenic myeloid metaplasia or myelofibrosis does not cause the same symptoms across all those affected by AMM. Since symptoms differ, treatment options also differ. Further, some people do not experience any symptoms at all for years together. Such people should be monitored and checked for any possible symptoms at intermittent intervals so that the situation does not escalate.
Treatments and Medications for Agnogenic Myeloid Metaplasia
Stem Cells Transplant: This is the only treatment that offers potential cure of myelofibrosis. Initially you receive high doses of chemotherapy to destroy your diseased bone marrow. Thereafter you receive stem cell infusions from a compatible donor. High risks of this treatment include adverse reaction by new stem cells against your healthy body cells, blood vessel damage, development of different type of cancer sometime later, and cataract.
Ruxolitinib: JAK2 gene mutation is thought to be responsible for myelofibrosis. The U.S Food and Drug Administration have approved Ruxolitinib as medication for myelofibrosis. It stops functioning of all JAK-related genes in your body. Even healthy cells are affected. Common side effects include increased bleeding and infection due to fall in platelet and red blood cell count, dizziness, bruising, and headaches.
Treating Anemia: If you suffer from severe anemia, opt for androgen therapy, blood transfusions, or thalidomide and related medications. Androgen therapy involves partaking synthetic male hormone androgen to improve red blood cell production. Side effects include growth of prostate cancer cells in men, liver damage, and development of male-like characteristics in women. Blood transfusions at regular intervals boost your red blood cell count. You overcome exertion and fatigue. Thalidomide medications improve blood cell count and improve condition of your enlarged spleen. However, these medications cause serious side effects.
Surgery and Therapy: Doctors normally suggest chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or surgical removal of enlarged spleen. Chemotherapy shrinks size of enlarged spleen and provides relief from pain. Radiation therapy uses high-powered X-rays to kill cells. However, these options are suggested only if surgical removal of spleen is not possible. Surgical removal of spleen or splenectomy is beneficial but has many side effects. These include stroke or pulmonary embolism due to excessive bleeding, blood clot, abnormal increase in platelet count, and liver enlargement.
