Indian Government Ups Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Jute to Rs. 2,200 Per 100 Kgs

The Government of India has increased the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of raw jute of TD-5 grade (a tossa variety grown in Assam) from Rs. 1,675 per quintal (100 Kilograms) to Rs. 2,200 per quintal for the 2012-2013 season (July 2012 to June 2013).

This is an increase of Rs. 525 a quintal or 31.34 percent over last year’s Minimum Support Price fixed for jute.

The Indian government has also fixed the corresponding Minimum Support Prices for other varieties and grades of raw jute across locations keeping in view, apart from normal market price differentials, the aggregate scores assigned to different grades of raw jute.

Similarly, Minimum Support Prices for all grades of mesta for various upcountry markets in different mesta growing states have been fixed for the 2012-2013 season.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) took this decision to hike the MSP of raw jute in its meeting held on Thursday, March 01, 2012 in New Delhi.

Every year, the Government of India determines the Minimum Support Price of various grades of raw jute based on the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Cost and Prices (CACP).

Jute Corporation of India (JCI) will continue as the central government’s nodal agency undertaking price support operations. The Government of India will fully reimburse the Jute Corporation of India for losses, if any, incurred in its MSP operations for jute.

Food Corporation of India (FCI) and sugar millers are the main buyers of jute bags in India. In order to encourage jute production in the country, the law makes it mandatory for the sugar mills and FCI to package all their products in jute bags only.
