New Delhi (Delhi, India), September 09, 2021
The Government of India has increased the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of wheat from ₹1,975 per quintal (100 Kilograms) to ₹2,015 per quintal for the crop year 2021-2022 (July-June) and rabi marketing season 2022-2023 (April-March).
This is an increase of ₹40 a quintal or 2.03 percent over last year’s Minimum Support Price for wheat.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, took this decision to hike the MSP of wheat in its meeting held on Wednesday, September 08, 2021 in New Delhi.
Every year, the Government of India determines the Minimum Support Price of wheat based on the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Cost and Prices (CACP).
Last year (marketing season 2021-2022), the Indian Government had procured wheat at ₹1,975 per quintal, which included a bonus of Rs. 0 over and above the Minimum Support Price of ₹1,975 a quintal.
The increase in Minimum Support Price of wheat is likely to lead to a rise in the central government’s food subsidy bill in the next financial year.
Wheat is the main crop grown in the rabi season (winter season). Sowing of wheat crop starts in October and harvesting takes place from April.
