India’s state-owned Oil Marketing Companies – Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), have raised the prices of petrol by over Rs. 3.13 (including VAT) per litre across India with effect from Saturday, May 16, 2015.
Petrol Prices in India: The Latest Gasoline Prices in Indian Cities
Current petrol prices in India vary from city-to-city depending on the Value Added Tax (VAT) and other local levies.
The petrol price in Delhi has been increased by Rs. 3.13 a litre from Rs. 63.16 to Rs. 66.29 per litre.
The price of petrol in Mumbai has been hiked by Rs. 3.28 a litre from Rs. 70.84 to Rs. 74.12 per litre.
The petrol price in Kolkata has been raised by Rs. 3.32 a litre from Rs. 70.44 to Rs. 73.76 per litre.
The price of petrol in Chennai has been upped by Rs. 3.37 a litre from Rs. 66.08 to Rs. 69.45 per litre.
The petrol price in India was freed from the government control in June 2010 to reduce the massive subsidies paid to the state-run Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).
Public sector oil companies are free to sell petrol and diesel at market rates in India. However, the Indian government controls the retail prices of kerosene and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
India relies on imported crude oil to the extent of almost 80 percent of its domestic needs.
Rise in the gasoline prices would add to the high inflation, as commuting expenses go up and stretch the household budgets. Petrol has a 1.09 percent weight and diesel 4.7 percent weight in the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) basket.
