Achilles Tendon Rupture: Signs and Symptoms
It is common to have an Achilles tendon rupture without any symptoms. However, common symptoms include:
– Inability to stand up on toes of injured tendon or leg
– Unable to bend foot downward
– Unable to lift feet to walk
– Extreme pain and swelling near heel
– Snapping or popping sound when tendon ruptures followed by unbearable pain in lower calf muscles
– Loss of plantar flexion power in foot
– Unable to climb up or down stairs or run
– Unable to bear any weight on affected foot and leg
– A depression or gap in tendon region around two inches above heel bone
– Stiffness and swelling of calf muscles and lower leg followed by extreme weakness
– Initial pain, swelling, and stiffness of tendon and ankle with sensation of being hit or kicked at back of leg or as if someone has stepped onto your ankle may be followed by bruising and weakness.
Sometimes pain decreases quickly and smaller tendons offer support. You are then able to point your toes in a downward direction. Nonetheless, it does seem difficult. It is more common to have a complete tendon rupture than a partial one.
Seek medical advice as soon as you feel any of the symptoms. Do not delay as it could lead to more debilitating situations.
