What is Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome?

Definition of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome or AIDS is a disease of human immune system caused by HIV or human immunodeficiency virus. AIDS is the most advanced stage of HIV infection. This is a chronic and fatal condition as HIV damages your immune system. Your body is unable to fight disease-causing organisms. Slowly over many years, HIV alters your immune system and you become more vulnerable to infections and diseases. The condition worsens as the disease progresses.

Although there is no vaccine or cure for AIDS as of now, yet medications can reduce progress of disease extensively. Nonetheless, such medications and awareness is prevalent in developed countries only. It is a deadly disease in most parts of interior Africa and Asia.

Diagnosis of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

AIDS is caused by HIV infection. The infection spreads mainly due to unprotected sexual intercourse including anal and oral sex. It could also spread through hypodermic needles, contaminated blood transfusions, from infected mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding.

HIV is a very small virus with ribonucleic acid or RNA as its genetic material. This virus uses reverse transcriptase, a special enzyme, to turn its RNA into DNA. When HIV reproduces, small genetic mutational errors occur. Hence, reproduced viruses are not identical and differ very minutely. These minor variations allow HIV to attack your immune system and cause infections. Slowly, over time, these infections translate into AIDS.
