Causes of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
The primary cause for HIV or AIDS infection is through infected vaginal and semen secretions or blood. Infection can be passed through:
Sexual contact: If you have sexual intercourse (could be vaginal, oral, or anal) with an infected partner, you develop HIV infection when infected semen or vaginal secretions enter your body. Sometimes small tears or mouth sores form in vagina or rectum during sexual activity. Virus enters your body through these sores.
Mother to Child: Infected mothers pass the virus to their babies during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding.
Sharing Needles: If you share intravenous drugs through syringes and needles used by infected people, you can contract HIV virus leading to AIDS.
Blood Transfusions: Transfusions are common in surgical processes. If blood is transfused without screening, you could develop HIV infection.
Your blood contains specific type of white blood cells, CD4 cells. These cells protect your body from diseases. HIV gradually destroys CD4 cells. As CD4 cell count reduces, your immune system weakens and you develop infection. Once infected with HIV, it takes years to translate into AIDS.
Evaluation of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
Scientific research traces origin of HIV infection to monkey and chimpanzee populations of Africa. Humans hunted these animals for food. Man could have been contracted this virus through a possible contact with infected blood of such animals either during butchering or cooking.
