Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome: Diagnostic Tests and Procedures

HIV antigen test is the best test to detect presence of HIV antibodies in blood soon after infection. HIV antigen is a protein produced by the virus immediately after infection. If this test results are positive, you are classified as HIV-positive or HIV (+).

HIV test to detect antibodies in saliva or blood is not accurate. Antibodies develop only after around twelve weeks or sometimes even six months after infection.

Diagnostic Tests to Detect HIV-AIDS Stage

Once you are diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, you should undergo different tests to evaluate specific stage of the disease. Tests include:

Viral Load: This detects amount of virus in your blood. If you have higher viral loads, it indicates extensive HIV/AIDS infection. If viral load is low, you are at primary stage of infection.

CD4 Count: HIV attacks and kills CD4 cells specifically. Normal count of CD4 cells in a healthy human range from five hundred to even higher than one thousand. If your CD4 cell count is less than two hundred, you are infected with HIV although you display no significant symptoms.

Drug Resistance: This test analyzes if your HIV strain is resistant to any specific anti-HIV medications or drugs.

Other tests to detect complications occurring due to HIV-positive status include those for toxoplasmosis, tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections, hepatitis, urinary tract infection, and liver or kidney damage.
