Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome: Clinical Trials and Research Studies

Clinical trials and research has been continuously going on ever since HIV was identified. It remains the most studied virus. Very recent research has identified a vulnerable spot on outer shell of HIV. This is ‘position 332’. This is a specific spot of glycan, a sugar form, found on the protein coating of HIV. Extensive neutralizing antibodies of your body can attack and destabilize HIV. This enabled two HIV-positive people to make powerful antibodies to do away with major HIV types known globally. These antibodies can help create AIDS vaccine in future.

HAART is only a therapy and not a cure for AIDS. You have to take medicines for life even if viral levels are appreciably low. The major problem in discovering an effective vaccine for AIDS is that HIV can hide anywhere in your body. Sometimes virus becomes dormant and does not reproduce actively. Hence, medications that inhibit reproduction of HIV cannot function. Often, HIV becomes active once medication is stopped. Research is on to locate what causes such latency in HIV, when does it become dormant, and what induces its reactivation. Research is also ongoing to determine simpler dosage and drug regimens of AIDS medications to overcome major side effects of such medications. This will also bring down treatment costs considerably. It will then be more affordable for people in developing countries.
