Chest pain is the most common symptom of acute coronary syndrome. Often, other factors like volume of myocardium affected, extent and severity of coronary artery obstruction, your demand for oxygen, and ability of the rest of your heart to compensate restriction in oxygen supply determine your clinical representation of acute coronary syndrome. Hence, severity of symptoms differs across different people.
Sometimes, other factors like indigestion or anxiety also cause chest pain. Further, not all acute coronary syndrome patients experience chest pain. Some report pain in upper arms, neck, and jaw, some report breathlessness, while some others report nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. Since acute coronary syndrome commonly occurs across people around the age of sixty or sixty-five, such elderly people often suffer from disturbed mental abilities. Due to this, many do not remember previous symptoms or are unable to explain symptoms they experience frequently. Hence, diagnosis is difficult.
Clinical evidences indicate that women suffer acute coronary syndrome without any symptoms at all. This is the reason for greater incidence of acute coronary syndrome in elderly women. It is common for more than half of acute coronary syndrome cases to develop silently as symptoms remain unrecognized and therefore unattended. Sometimes, symptoms are attributed to high stress levels and hence diagnosis is delayed leading to serious consequences. Often, those with end-stage renal disease develop acute coronary syndrome. It is also not very clear about acute coronary syndrome in those on dialysis.
