What is Acute Kidney Failure?
Definition of Acute Kidney Failure
When your kidneys are suddenly unable to remove or filter waste from your blood and maintain balance of fluids and electrolytes in your body, it is acute kidney failure or AKI. It is same as acute kidney injury or acute renal failure or ARF. This sudden failure could develop over few days or within few hours.
Acute kidney failure commonly occurs in very critically ill people requiring intensive care, rather people who are already hospitalized. Acute kidney failure can be fatal. Yet sometimes acute kidney failure can be reversed and your kidney function can be normalized if you are in good health.
Diagnosis of Acute Kidney Failure
Acute kidney failure develops due to various reasons like exposure to harmful substances, decreased or low blood volume, obstruction of urinary tract, and others. When your kidneys are unable to filter out waste materials from your blood, creatinine and urea nitrogen levels in blood increase and kidney is not able to produce sufficient amounts of urine. These accumulated wastes distort chemical balance of blood.
Acute kidney failure diagnosis is normally through blood tests to detect levels of creatinine and urea. Detailed analysis includes renal ultrasound, urine sediment analysis, and/or kidney biopsy.
Acute kidney failure leads to various complicated medical situations like high potassium levels, changes in body fluid balance, metabolic acidosis, and uremia. It affects normal functioning of other body organs. Treating the specific cause for acute kidney failure and adopting renal replacement therapy can provide necessary relief.
