What is Acute Radiation Syndrome?
Definition of Acute Radiation Syndrome
Acute radiation syndrome is an illness occurring due to excessive exposure to ionizing radiation. Radiation could be non-ionizing or ionizing. Non-ionizing radiation occurs through radio waves, light waves, microwaves, and radar. This radiation does not cause any damage. Ionizing radiation is through gamma rays, X-rays, and particle bombardment by electron beam, neutron beam, protons, and mesons. Such radiation is commonly used for industrial and manufacturing purposes, medical testing and treatment, weapons and weapons development.
When you are exposed to radiation of more than 1 Gy in very short time, you suffer acute radiation syndrome. This causes external and internal contamination. When radioactive minerals fall on your clothes or body, it is external contamination. If you eat contaminated food, drink contaminated water, or breathe contaminated air, it is internal contamination. Absorption of radioactive particles through open wounds or skin pores is also internal contamination. The Gray (Gy) is a unit of absorbed dose. It is equivalent to the amount of energy deposited into a mass of tissue (1 Gy = 100 rads).
Diagnosis of Acute Radiation Syndrome
Diagnosis of acute radiation syndrome is through clinical findings, a clear history of amount of radiation, and time of radiation. If radiation exposure is less than 1 Gy, symptoms are negligent or almost nil. It normally lowers white blood cell count, which grows back to normal levels all by itself.
