Radiation absorbed is measured in specific units called Gray or Gy. X-rays normally use very small doses of radiation, well below 0.1Gy. Further, x-ray is normally on specific body tissue or organ. Signs and symptoms of acute radiation syndrome develop only when your entire body absorbs radiation of at least 1 Gy. Further, radiation of more than 6 Gy cannot be treated and leads to death within a fortnight.
Acute Radiation Syndrome: Signs and Symptoms
The earliest symptoms of acute radiation syndrome are similar and common to most illnesses. These include fatigue, headache, vomiting, and nausea.
Acute radiation syndrome symptoms can be divided into three groups:
1. Hematopoietic,
2. Gastrointestinal
3. Neurological or vascular
1. Hematopoietic: If radiation exposure to whole body is around 0.25 Gy, you suffer aplastic anemia. Number of blood cells drop causing bleeding due to low platelets, increased infections due to low white blood cells, and anemia due to low red blood cells.
2. Gastrointestinal: When radiation exposure is around 6–30 Gy or 600–3000 rad, common symptoms occurring within two hours are vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain. Death occurs due to infection. Bone marrow transplant can provide relief only if done early.
3. Neurovascular: When radiation exposure to whole body is more than30 Gy or 3000 rad, it causes various neurological symptoms like headache, dizziness, and loss of consciousness within few minutes or hours. This is fatal.
