Complications due to acute radiation syndrome are many and far-reaching. Some occur and are visible soon after exposure while some remain latent and surface after many years or even get transferred to next generations.
Radiation damages cells and leads to death of cells. When you undergo radiation treatment for tumors or cancers, radiation therapy kills these cells. However, while killing tumor or cancerous cells, few healthy cells also get damaged. Technological advances help restrict such damage appreciably.
Similarly acute radiation syndrome occurring due to extensive radiation exposure causes damage corresponding to dose rate of exposure, total amount of energy absorbed, and total time of absorption. Normally, healthy cells can repair damage caused by small doses of radiation.
Complications of acute radiation syndrome could be due to:
1. Acute Radiation Exposure: This causes immediate and serious damage to bone marrow resulting in bacterial infections, gastrointestinal disorders, anemia, and hemorrhage. Later complications include cataracts and cancer. Sometimes, such exposure causes instant death.
2. Chronic Radiation Exposure: Such exposure may not display any immediate symptoms at all. However, you develop various complications later in life. These include benign tumors, precancerous lesions, cancer, skin changes, cataracts, and congenital defects.
