Acute Radiation Syndrome: Clinical Trials and Research Studies
The major cause of acute radiation syndrome is depletion of immature parenchymal stem cells in specific tissues.
Conditions for classification of radiation as acute radiation syndrome include:
– Radiation dose should be more than 0.7 Gray (Gy) 1, 2 or 70 rads.
– Source of radiation should be external.
– Radiation must be penetrative enough to reach all internal organs. Gamma rays, high energy X-rays, and neutrons are capable of such penetrating radiations.
– Radiation dose should have been delivered within a very short time rather within minutes.
The best way to detect acute radiation syndrome is through the amount of radiation absorbed by the whole body. Absorbed dose is measured in units of gray (Gy) or rad. Other absorption parameters like effective dose, equivalent dose, and committed dose cannot measure radiation syndrome effectively. These can measure and evaluate radiation absorption for other ailments like cancer.
When most of the radiation absorption is external whole-body gamma, effective and equivalent doses remain equal. This causes acute radiation syndrome with exceptions as in few cases like 1958 Cecil Kelley criticality accident and Therac-25 accidents.
In order to treat such extensive radiation absorption, the best technique is to adopt radiotherapy treatments of 60 Gy or higher. However, dosage for each day is restricted to about 2 Gy targeting the entire body mass. This incites tissues to grow back normally.
