What is Adenomyosis?
Definition of Adenomyosis
Adenomyosis is when muscles lining inner wall of uterus thicken within and move to outer lining of uterus. This normally occurs in women between the ages of 35 and 50. There is apparently no specific cause for adenomyosis. Condition could be localized within a single part of uterus or encompass entire uterus. Adenomyosis predominantly occurs in menopausal women. Although it is not a serious medical condition, it does cause lot of discomfort and pain. It affects your health negatively.
Adenomyosis consists of adeno (gland), myo (muscle), and osis (condition). It literally means muscular condition of uterine gland. Adenomyosis sometimes causes menstrual cramps and bloating of abdominal region before menstrual periods. It can cause painful and heavy periods. Some women suffer extensive pain only but periods are not heavy.
Adenomyosis is often confused with endometriosis, which is a medical condition where uterine lining gets implanted outside uterus. These two conditions are different and in very rare cases, both occur together.
Diagnosis of Adenomyosis
Doctor initially does a physical examination of pelvic area to detect enlargement of uterus. Thereafter doctor advises MRI and transvaginal ultrasound scans. These tests show images of uterus, its lining, and muscular walls. MRI can classify adenomyosis according to the depth of penetration of endometrial tissue (inner lining of tissue). Although ultrasound does not definitely indicate adenomyosis, it clears away other medical conditions with similar symptoms.
