ADHD in Children: Self-Help
Managing an ADHD child is difficult and can strain many relationships. Your other children feel neglected and sometimes ADHD child’s aggressive or conflicting behavior could be disturbing. Both parents should be extremely understanding and cooperative in their efforts in caring for all children.
Self-help strategies include:
1. Set small and realistic goals for you and your child. This boosts self-confidence.
2. If changes have to be incorporated, start preparing well in advance and explain to your child beforehand. Keep repeating to-be-implemented changes at regular intervals.
3. Practice stress management techniques to keep your emotions under control. Never lose your temper in front of your ADHD child. Be patient and calm. Even if you have to reprimand, do it in a composed but strict tone.
4. Give yourself a break, relax and rest. Seek help from baby-sitters, caregivers, or your friends and family members to care for your child while you rest. Ensure such caregivers are adept at handling ADHD children. You cannot be a good parent unless you rest adequately.
