Age Spots – Definition and Diagnosis

Definition of Age Spots

Age spots are small and flat spots normally in gray, red, black, or light brown colors. These appear on areas of body exposed to sun like arms, hands, face, shoulders, forehead, and scalp if bald. These spots vary in size across different individuals. Age spots commonly occur on adults over the age of forty. Very few young adults develop such age spots.

Age spots are also known as liver spots, although they have nothing to do with liver functions. Only color of these spots is similar to that of liver. The name was so derived, as in earlier days, age spots were believed to be due to liver problems. Age spots are same as Lentigo senilis, solar lentigo, senile freckle, and old age spot.

Diagnosis of Age Spots

Although age spots look cancerous, they are harmless and do not require any treatment. Many choose using skin-bleaching products on age spots or remove them for purely cosmetic reasons. The easier way to maintain a youthful look is to avoid direct exposure to sun’s harmful rays or using a sunscreen to protect your skin.

Age spots commonly occur beyond the age of forty, as thereafter your skin is unable to regenerate from sun exposure. Age spots occur more in people who spend lot of time in the sun. Sometimes, these spots pose difficulty in detection of skin cancer.
